Why SJSM does not require MCAT?

At Saint James School of Medicine (SJSM), we believe that medical school admissions should be a holistic process. In fact, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC) provides recommendations on how MCAT scores should be used in admissions; most notably recommending that MCAT scores should not outweigh an applicant’s other qualities. For this reason SJSM continues to be one of the Caribbean medical schools that doesn’t require and MCAT for admission into it’s program.

Other things we consider when accepting a student into our program:

  • Prior Education GPA;
  • Degrees Completed;
  • Coursework taken;
  • Letters of recommendation;
  • Work Experience;
  • Volunteer experience.

While an MCAT score is a welcome addition to the overall application, it is not a requirement.

FAQ

Will my Nursing Credits transfer into the MD Program?

Unfortunately, your credits from the nursing program will not transfer into our MD program. We will, however, use your credits and your experience to determine your eligibility for our MD program.

How many college credits do you require?

We require 90 credit hours from a regionally accredited institution.

I’ve been out of school for a while. Is that a problem?

We prefer that students have had exposure to formal classroom instruction in the last five years. However, if you have hands-on experience in the healthcare industry, our Admissions Committee will often look favorably on your application.

I feel I may be too old to join an MD program. Is there an age restriction?

Age is not a factor during our admissions process. We have had several graduates who were over 50 years old when they initially entered the program, and most of them have subsequently matched for residency afterwards.

How long do I have to stay in the Caribbean?

The first 20 months of our program are conducted in the Caribbean. After that, the students return to the United States to complete their clinical rotations.

Can I do a certain portion of the program online?

Unfortunately, medical education is not allowed to be conducted online.

Can I work while in school?

It is unlikely that you will have enough time to commit to work, in addition to our MD program. Our program is fast-paced, and it is designed to provide you with the optimal amount of information and knowledge in the least amount of time possible. Medical school requires significant time commitment and we do not encourage students to be involved in other time-consuming activities.
