Total knee replacement is necessary when an individual can no longer perform day-to-day functions such as walking and going up and down stairs. There are approximately 600,000 total knee replacements being performed annually in the United States and most of procedures are performed on those between 50-80 years of age. However, this treatment is performed on all ages, depending on the nature of one’s medical condition and history.

The primary reason someone is required to have a total knee replacement surgery would be as result of arthritis. Some additional reasons may be due to chronic pain that cannot be relieved, inflammation that can’t be resolved with therapy, injections and medication or deformity of the knees.

Deciding have knee surgery is a serious decision between a doctor and his or her patient. The physician will provide a referral to an orthopedic surgeon for consultation and complete evaluation to ensure that this is most beneficial—and safest—route.
