Dr. Mohamed Tarek Shata, PhD, Professor of Microbiology and Immunology at SJSM-St. Vincent has been invited to participate in the NIH study section as co-chair, scheduled for August 8th in Washington, D.C.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) is a biomedical research facility, and is part of the United States Department of Health and Human Services, the primary agency of the United States government responsible for biomedical and health-related research. It conducts both its own scientific research (Intramural Research Program) and funds research conducted in non-NIH research facilities (Extramural Research Program). Its intramural research program is the largest biomedical research institution in the world, and its extramural program provides around 30% of biomedical research funding annually in the U.S.

Of course, all projects and grants need the approval before funds are allocated and before Dr. Shata is allowed to participate in scientific and grant reviews for NIH. Dr. Shata also takes part in in international collaborative projects (U.S.-worldwide), participates in scientific and grant reviews for NIH and other institutions, is chair and co-chair in different meetings for the Institute and is a reviewer and member of editorial boards of top-class journals, including NEJM.

Congratulations Dr. Shata!
