USMLE Step 1 Prequalification Requirement

 Students who are ready to take the USMLE Step 1 must pass a prequalification exam prior to each ECFMG certification approved by the school.

All students are required to pass the NBME Comprehensive Basic Science Exam (CBSE) before being certified for Step 1.

Eligibility

  • Must complete AICM requirement.
  • Must be in good academic and financial standing.

 Passing Scores

  • For the NBME CBSE, the passing score will be based on the equivalent USMLE Step 1 score provided on the score report.
  • A higher passing score is required for the third and fourth certifications.
    • First and Second Certifications: ≥192 USMLE Step 1 equivalent
    • Third and Fourth Certifications: ≥207 USMLE Step 1 equivalent

 

USMLE Step 2 CK Prequalification Requirement

Effective June 1, 2016, students who are ready to take USMLE Step 2 CK must pass a prequalification exam prior to each ECFMG certification approved by the school.

All students will be required to pass the NBME Comprehensive Clinical Science Exam (CCSE) before being certified for Step 2 CK.

Eligibility

  • Effective June 1, 2016, students must complete Family Medicine, Internal Medicine and Surgery core rotations before taking the prequalification exam for Step 2 CK or being certified for Step 2 CS.
  • Must be in good academic and financial standing.

 Passing Scores

  • For the NBME CCSE, the passing score will be based on the equivalent USMLE Step 2 CK score provided on the score report.
  • For all certifications, must score ≥209 USMLE Step 2 CK equivalent.

 

Scheduling Either NBME Exam is a Multistep Process

 

  1. Registration with SJSM
  • Testing windows open every two weeks and are two weeks in duration.
  • Can select the two week period on the sign up form.
  • Registration deadlines are provided on sign up form and are typically five to six weeks prior to the testing period.
  • Will be notified by email within 48 working hours if registration is approved or denied.
  • Once approved, cannot cancel registration after the deadline has passed.
  • Student will be locked into the testing period they chose; it cannot be changed or extended for any reason.

 

  1. Schedule a Testing Appointment with Prometric
  • Scheduling permit is sent to the student from NBME 3-4 days after the registration deadline.
  • Student can schedule the testing appointment via Prometric’s website once permit is received.
  • Appointment at Prometric centers may be limited and should be scheduled as soon as the permit is received.

Fees

  • $150 NBME Exam Fee will be charged for Exams taken on May 30, 2016 or later
  • Fee will not be removed for exams that are missed or canceled after the sign up deadline.
  • An additional $60 Cancellation Fee will also be added if an NBME exam is missed or cancelled.
