New Clinical Science Program USMLE Requirements

Several changes are being implemented to ensure students are better prepared to sit for all portions of the USMLE and to improve the overall quality of the program. Please review the changes below as they will affect all students on the specified dates. USMLE Step 1  Effective May 1, 2016 – All students will be required to pass the NBME Comprehensive Basic Science Exam (CBSE) before being certified for Step 1. The MySJSM in-house prequalification exam will no longer be an option.
  • Fees to go up to $150 starting with the May 30 – June 12 testing window.
  • Must sign up for exam six weeks in advance, so plan accordingly.

Effective May 1, 2016 – Any student that fails the NBME, CBSE, or USMLE Step 1 will be required to complete an academic counseling session with a member of the Office of the Dean of Clinical Sciences to create a plan to be successful in the next round of exams. Effective May 1, 2016 – All students who pass Step 1 must complete a Preclinical Workshop through MySJSM (Moodle) before they can schedule a rotation. This consists of a short video followed by a quiz. USMLE Step 2 Effective June 1, 2016 – All students will be required to pass the NBME Comprehensive Clinical Science Exam (CCSE) before being certified for Step 2 CK.
  • $150 fee will be charged for each exam to be paid during the next billing cycle.

Effective June 1, 2016 – All students will be required to complete Family Medicine, Internal Medicine, and Surgery core rotations before taking the Step 2 CK prequalification exam or being certified for Step 2 CS. Effective September 1, 2017 – All students will be required to complete all six core rotations before taking the Step 2 CK prequalification exam or being certified for Step 2 CS. Additional information will be provided to you as you progress through the program.
