Dr. Molly Jain

Dr. Molly Jain

Dr. Molly Jain, an internal medicine resident at Parkview Health, Indiana, brings a relentless commitment to healthcare equity to her journey. Raised in India, she witnessed stark healthcare disparities and moved to Canada at 14, later earning a biology degree. Molly's passion led her to medicine, and she chose Saint James School of Medicine for its supportive faculty.

Achievement:

Dr. Molly Jain pursued an MBA alongside medicine, demonstrating her initiative and self-learning ability. She became a Teaching Assistant and sought guidance from professors. Her rigorous preparation helped her excel in the USMLE exams.

Her advice for aspiring students: Start early, establish a daily routine with question banks, and connect with experienced professionals at conferences.

After a nerve-wracking interview process, Molly's tears of joy upon securing her residency placement showcased her unwavering commitment.

Now at Parkview Health, Molly focuses on her internal medicine residency, determined to make a significant impact. Her journey is a testament to perseverance, dedication, and passion for healthcare. As she navigates her residency, Molly's experiences will guide her towards her future goals, continuing her mission to bridge healthcare gaps and improve lives.

Dr. Chafi Samen Kehedy

Dr. Chafi Samen Kehedy

Chafi recently graduated from the Saint James School of Medicine, following an unconventional path that started with a Bachelor's degree in Political Science and a Biology minor from Denison University in Ohio. Inspired by his mother's legacy as a doctor, Chafi embarked on a journey into medicine, initially drawn to Saint James School of Medicine in the Caribbean due to its affordability as well as the program quality.

Achievement:

Transitioning to life on the island was smooth for Chafi, having grown up in Africa. He immersed himself in the local culture, fostering a sense of belonging. Academically, SJSM provided a rigorous curriculum with accessible professors, nurturing his investigative spirit and critical thinking skills.

The clinical years were particularly rewarding, offering hands-on experience and patient interactions. Chafi's success in the USMLE exams underscored the importance of self-directed learning and personalized study techniques.

Match Week brought the culmination of his efforts, securing a General Surgery residency at the University of Maryland. Chafi's journey included giving back as a USMLE counselor at St. James, assisting fellow students.

Chafi remains grateful for the support and education received at St. James, with a commitment to paying it forward and helping others pursue their medical aspirations.

Dr. Ronnie Archie

Dr. Ronnie Archie

Dr. Ronnie Archie, a third-year emergency medicine resident and Recruitment/Medical Student chair at Franciscan Health Olympia Fields in Chicago's south suburbs, embodies a journey marked by steadfast dedication. His path commenced at the University of Rochester, where immersion in emergency medical services kindled a passion for healthcare.

Achievement:

Achieving EMT certification solidified his aspiration to work in medicine, fueled by a fascination with emergency medicine from an early age, partly inspired by the TV show ER.

During his academic journey, Dr. Archie came across a flyer spotlighting Caribbean medical schools, which later played a pivotal role in his career choice. Transitioning to Anguilla for medical school initially felt like a change of scenery. However, the demands of medical education quickly shifted his focus to rigorous studies, and the island's allure became secondary.

Despite facing moments of self-doubt, common among medical students, Dr. Archie's unwavering determination and passion for emergency medicine kept him on course. His commitment to preparation led him to complete valuable rotations, including one in burn care at an affiliated hospital, resulting in additional training opportunities. This extra training offered a crucial perspective into the hospital system and the role of a new doctor.

Currently in the third year of his emergency medicine residency, Dr. Archie is currently applying for EMS/disaster fellowships to further his expertise. His journey serves as an inspiring testament to the resilience and dedication required to excel in the field of medicine. We anticipate witnessing his continued success in emergency medicine.

Dr. Saad Hanan

Dr. Saad Hanan

Dr. Saad Hanan is a remarkable individual who has made significant contributions to the field of medicine, research, and medical education. With his passion for evidence-based medicine and commitment to improving community health.

Achievement:
During his tenure as the President of the AMSA (American Medical Student Association) chapter in Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Dr. Hanan spearheaded numerous initiatives aimed at promoting health and wellness. One of his most notable accomplishments was the organization of monthly health fairs, where he brought together healthcare professionals, students, and local communities to raise awareness about various health issues. These fairs served as a platform for disseminating vital health information and providing access to healthcare resources.

In addition to the local health fairs, Dr. Hanan led a health fair retrieval mission to the neighboring island of Bequia. This venture showcased his dedication to extending healthcare services to underserved areas and promoting equitable access to quality medical care. Dr. Hanan's efforts have not only impacted the lives of individuals within his community but also served as a model for other healthcare organizations.

Dr. Hanan's passion for research and evidence-based medicine has fueled his academic pursuits. He has contributed significantly to the medical literature through his publications, exploring a diverse range of topics. His rigorous approach to research has enriched the scientific community.

Recognizing the importance of mentorship and guidance, Dr. Hanan served as a USMLE (United States Medical Licensing Examination) counselor, providing invaluable support to students at SJSM (Saint James School of Medicine). His expertise and dedication in preparing students for board exams have been instrumental in helping them achieve success in their medical careers.

Dr. Hanan's commitment to medical education extends beyond the shores of Saint Vincent and the Grenadines. He embarked on a trip to Canada to explore the possibilities of Canadian students pursuing their dreams of becoming doctors in the Caribbean. His visit caught the attention of SchoolFinder, which honored his work by publishing an article about him. This recognition serves as a testament to Dr. Hanan's unwavering dedication to facilitating opportunities for aspiring medical professionals.

In summary, Dr. Saad Hanan is a visionary SJSM Alumni who has left an indelible mark on the field of medicine and medical education. Dr. Hoa Nguyen

Dr. Hoa Nguyen

Hoa Nguyen is a dedicated individual with a passion for making a positive impact in the world. Born and raised in Dallas, Texas, Hoa developed a strong interest in science from a young age. This interest led him to pursue a Bachelor's degree in Biochemistry, which he successfully completed at a renowned university.

Achievement:
During his academic journey, Hoa's deep sense of compassion and desire to help others inspired him to establish his charity. With a focus on improving access to healthcare and education in underserved communities, his charity quickly gained recognition for its impactful initiatives.

After completing his undergraduate studies, Hoa embarked on a career in the medical field. He began working as a research coordinator at the University of Chicago, where he actively contributed to the advancement of medical knowledge by coordinating and conducting various research projects. His meticulous attention to detail and strong analytical skills made him a valuable asset to the research team.

Driven by a desire to deepen his understanding of medicine and provide direct care to patients, Hoa decided to pursue his dream of becoming a doctor. He was accepted into a prestigious medical school, where he dedicated himself to acquiring the knowledge and skills necessary to become a compassionate and competent physician. Hoa's commitment to education and helping others extended beyond his studies. He also served as a tutor and mentor for medical students preparing for their USMLE board exams. He generously shared his expertise, guidance, and support, helping aspiring doctors navigate the challenging exam process and excel in their medical careers.

Hoa is drawn to community health as a channel for empowering healthy communities. He firmly believes in patient-centered care for all individuals, regardless of socioeconomic status and background. His experiences working with underserved populations have fueled his commitment to addressing healthcare disparities and ensuring equal access to quality care.

Throughout his journey, Hoa has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving the lives of others. His dedication to his studies, coupled with his philanthropic endeavors, sets him apart as a truly remarkable individual. With his extensive background in biochemistry, research experience, and the pursuit of a medical degree, Hoa is poised to make significant contributions to the field of medicine. He envisions a future where healthcare is accessible to all, and where every individual receives compassionate, patient-centered care to achieve optimal health and well-being.

Dr. Nguyen enjoys running, bicycling (both mountain and road), playing chess, outdoor adventures (hiking, rock climbing), fitness and health (exercising), and challenging himself by learning new skills.

Dr. Erika Singh

Dr. Erika Singh

Program: Psychology
Year of Graduaiting: 2019
Now Working: University of North Dakota’s Family Medicine

Dr. Singh completed her undergraduate degree in Psychology at Indiana University Northwest, intending to become a psychologist after graduation, but a course in Anatomy and Physiology set her on a different path.

Achievement:
Dr. Singh graduated from SJSM in 2019 and is currently undergoing her third year of residency at the University of North Dakota’s Family Medicine Program. As in any career, there will be good days and bad days – but in residency, those days depend on your schedule. She currently holds the position of Chief Resident and said she could not be happier with where she is thanks to the education and support she received from SJSM. “SJSM provided me with the platform to build upon my dreams,” said Dr. Singh. However, it is also important to remember that it’s not just the school; it’s the hard work and determination of our students that allow for our students to excel in achieving their goals. “SJSM will be there to support you, help you with your rotations, and make sure you have the resources you need to get that MD. If you put your mind to it and stay dedicated, nothing can stop you!”

Dr. Joyce Cheng

Dr. Joyce Cheng

Program: Biological Science
Year of Graduaiting: 2018
Now Working: Mercy Health System-IL

In every person’s life, there comes a time that will define who they are and what they hope to accomplish going forward. For Dr. Joyce Cheng, that time came in March h 2020 with the outbreak of the COVID-19 pandemic. We previously chatted with Dr. Cheng in 2018 as she was on the cusp of starting residency.

Achievement:
With that being said, Dr. Cheng has made the most of her residency program despite the disarray of the Covid-19 pandemic. From the first day of her residency, her attendings and fellow peers have shown her a great deal of support for an ever-changing profession. “I am constantly meeting different patients that present with a variety of symptoms, and I have gained valuable insights into new diseases and management/treatment,” she said. “I am also working in an incredibly supportive environment with a group of wonderful peers, attendings, nurses, and staff.” At the end of the day, she absolutely loves what she does and looks forward to becoming an internist. “My goal is to improve my patients’ outcomes by focusing on preventative health, allocating resources, and patient education”.

Dr. Roland Zhang

Program: Family Medicine program
Year of Graduaiting: 2018
Now Working: Family Medicine Resident @ Arnot Ogden Medical Center, NY

Throughout life’s journey, there are bound to be unforeseen twists and turns that lead us to a new avenue in how we perceive the world around us. For Dr. Roland Zhang growing up in Rochester, New York, this non-traditional path took place on his way to becoming a doctor.

Achievement:
“Entering medical school does not guarantee that you will graduate, pass your NBME/Step exams or Match into residency. Even if you do everything ‘right’, you can still not achieve what you want. However, what happens next is more critical,” said Roland. “While it is so easy to blame yourself, the esoteric rules, the university etc., what did YOU do when things did not go according to plan. These skills, traits and assets all help you build your own definition of success, whether as a practicing physician or another valued member of healthcare.” If there was one word to perfectly describe Dr. Roland Zhang is perseverant. No matter what obstacle is in his way, he will find a way to overcome it with a positive attitude and the privilege of serving as a medical doctor.

Dr. Crystal Richardson

Program: Sports Therapy
Year of Graduaiting: 2021
Now Working: Complete her Masters of Law (LLM)

Why enter a medical program out of the Caribbean? Is it for the endless opportunities it offers to achieve your dreams of a career in medicine? Is it because you may be an untraditional student that felt drawn to this calling later in life? Or are you looking for the best of both worlds, receiving a quality medical education on one of the serene islands in the Caribbean?

Achievement:
She was fortunate enough, even with the current pandemic, to complete a variety of in-patient rotations for electives, she looks forward to applying to the Match next cycle here and in the United Kingdom (UK). “I am currently in the process of enhancing my resume with research publications, publishing both Surgical Techniques, Complications, and Long-Term Health Effects of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices and Racial and socioeconomic disparities in congenital heart surgery: A research article,” said Crystal. Her research article entitled Surgical Techniques, Complications, and Long-Term Health Effects of Cardiac Implantable Electronic Devices was awarded third place in AZIYO’s “Strategies to Promote Long-Term Cardiac Implant Site Health” publishing competition.
